Electric motors are indispensable electric devices in modern society, widely used in industries, households, and transportation. Among them, DC motors are a common type of motor, divided into two main types: brushed motors and brushless motors. This article will introduce the working principles, advantages and disadvantages, and application areas of these two types of motors.

1、 DC brushless motor

DC brushless motor is a traditional type of motor that includes a brush and a rotating armature. The following is the working principle of a DC brushless motor:

1. Working principle: When the current flows into the armature through the brush, the armature begins to rotate, and the contact between the brush and the armature ensures that the current continuously enters the armature, thereby maintaining the rotation of the motor. The brush regularly contacts different parts of the armature to change the direction of current and maintain the direction of motor rotation.

2. Advantages:

a. Low cost: DC brushless motors typically have lower costs and are suitable for applications with lower economic requirements.

b. Quick start and stop: These motors can start and stop quickly and have responsive sensitivity.

3. Disadvantages:

a. Short lifespan: The electric brush wears out quickly and needs to be replaced regularly, resulting in a shorter lifespan.

b. Electromagnetic interference: Contact with brushes may cause electromagnetic interference and noise.

4. Application areas:

a. Portable tools: such as electric drills, mixers, etc.

b. Automotive starter: DC brushless motor is used in the starting system of automobiles.

c. Household appliances: including vacuum cleaners, mixers, and fans.

2、 DC brushless motor

DC brushless motor is an innovation in recent years, which adopts different working principles. The following is the working principle of a DC brushless motor:

1. Working principle: The DC brushless motor uses an electronic controller to drive the rotation of the motor without the need for brushes. The electronic controller monitors the position of the motor and changes the direction of the current at appropriate times to maintain the rotation of the motor.

2. Advantages:

a. Efficient: As brushless motors do not require brushes, they are usually more efficient and can generate less energy waste.

b. Long lifespan: Due to the absence of brush wear, brushless motors have a longer lifespan.

c. Low noise: Brushless motors typically have lower noise levels.

3. Disadvantages:

a. High cost: The manufacturing and control system cost of brushless motors is relatively high.

b. Complexity: Electronic control systems increase the complexity of motors.

4. Application areas:

a. Drones: DC brushless motors are widely used in drones and remote-controlled aircraft.

b. Electric vehicles: Electric vehicles and bicycles use brushless motors to provide efficient power.

c. Industrial automation: used to automate machinery and equipment.

Brushed DC motors and brushless DC motors play important roles in different application fields. The choice of which type of motor usually depends on cost, lifespan, efficiency, and application requirements. DC brushless motors are becoming increasingly popular in many modern high-tech applications because they provide higher efficiency and longer lifespan, but DC brushless motors still perform well in certain specific situations.
